Purvanchal Prahari was the first ever Hindi daily of the North East published by the GL Publications Ltd. About half a million Hindi-speaking people live in the North Eastern region in closer harmony with local multi-ethnic popluation. GL Publications was established in 1988 in Guwahati by Mr. GL Agarwalla, a businessman and philanthropist.

Purvanchal Prahari was launched on May 16, 1989. This is the only Hindi daily in the region with ABC certification. Th current circulation figure as per ABC certificate is 21,579.

Since its inception, this daily remained the market leader and was able to establish as one of the most sought after one by the Hindi-speaking people owing to its unbiased reporting and highlighting of vivid and varied problems being faced by them. It was also able to bridge the cultural gap the Hindi-speaking people felt in the region. The daily is simultaneously published from Guwahati, Jorhat and Lakhimpur. Its wide network of correspondents reach out to every nook and cranny of the North Eastern region and portray news and events with a realistic and humanistic approach. Whenever, Hindi-speaking people of the region were in trouble, Purvanchal Prahari came to their rscu highlighting their problems not only at he regional level but also at naional level.

GL Publications since its establishment has transformed itself into the largest media house of the North East. Four daily newspapers come out of this publication house reaching out a wide readership in the region.
The three other dailies are Amar Asom (Assamese) established on April 21, 1997, The Meghalaya Guardian, an exclusive English daily for Meghalaya, established on January 1, 1990 and The North East Times, another English daily for the entire region started on October 2, 1990.

Mr. GL Agarwalla has also entered into eco-tourism. The GL’s Resort situated near Kaziranga National Park, where the world’s last surviving species of one-horned rhinos roam around freely, is a blend of ethnic with modern. Staying in the ethnic cottages is an experience one can never forget.

Every Sunday, a special 4 page supplement Lohit Bharti is published along with the main papers. Apart from this, the annual Holi, Diwali and Anniversary supplements are very popular and eagerly awaited issues.
